They tried to give us a pick up truck in October even though we reserved an SUV. After weeks of phone/email communications which stated our original price, they just got it straightened out last week. After we arrived home we found they added an additional $599. It was very confusing there and we rent from them all the time, twice a year for a long lterm rental. Another agent came and said he would email us the receipt. The girl there was not familiar with the new system and didn't know how to handle our situation. We are always long term rentals and we had our car for 7 weeks and when we returned it they said we had to go to the Avis Counter. Even though Budget bought Avis, is appears they are pushing the Avis part. We are Budget Preferred and last fall we had a horrible time with them them. I was suckered into an AVIS rental by the promise of American frequent flyer miles and cash back in the form of an Amazon gift card (which I got), but it wasn't worth it. They were trying to deal with us and at least half a dozen other angry AVIS Preferred customers whose rentals had somehow been screwed up. We went back to the counter and I told her I had reserved a mid-sized SUV, which is what I wanted. I didn't ask what it was, but we got out there and found a pick-up truck which I didn't want for a number of reasons. Finally, she handed me keys and gave me a space number. The counter rep also took my DL (which they obviously already had all the information from). I walked into the AVIS Preferred booth in the garage and after a few minutes of explanation (from me as to what was happening), I was told that my CC needed to be "verified". I was again notified at that point that there was a problem with my CC and I needed to go to the reservation counter. She did assure me that my rental was confirmed and paid for, however, so we collected our bags and proceeded to the rental garage.Īs we were walking to the AVIS area, I opened the app again and hit the button on my reservation to find out what I was being given and what space it was in. Still standing at the baggage carousel, I called their customer service line and the non-US based rep I spoke with had no idea what I was trying to communicate. The app told me there was a problem with my CC (I had pre-paid, remember), but it wouldn't take any other card that I tried to put in. My wife and I flew into PHX and while we were waiting for our checked luggage, I opened my reservation in the AVIS app. I am an AVIS Preferred member and pre-paid for a mid-sized SUV weeks before our trip. I'm replying to this old thread because I had such a horrible experience at AVIS (PHX) that I will never rent from them again. If you're unhappy with the car, there's a counter outside. You are assigned a vehicle though, so you can also just go to the rental car center and find your spot listed. Super, super nice and made me want to rent from Avis more often, because I don't think anyone else has this. You're shown mileage, fuel level, vehicle features, etc. Last time I rented at PHX from Avis, I loaded up a list of cars while the plane was still taxiing and selected the one I wanted. ![]() That's why I don't think it's worth going through these third parties for rental cars, even if it saves a bit of money.Īvis released a new version of their app (for Android, at least) a few months ago which allows you to choose your specific vehicle before you even get to the rental car center. If you're not eligible for this, then you have to go to the counter. Just putting that out there first for clarification. If you are not a member, or you have rented from Avis via a third party (Hotwire, Expedia, etc.) then none of it applies.
